FAQ
Sugaring
What is sugaring?
Sugaring is an ancient Egyptian hair removal technique that uses a water-soluble sugar paste to extract unwanted hairs. Pretty, sweet, huh? A Sugarista (a SUGARED + BRONZED licensed, female esthetician) applies the sugaring paste against the natural direction of hair growth and then uses a gentle flicking motion to remove hair in the natural direction of the hair growth.
How is sugaring different than waxing?
Sugaring removes hair in the natural direction of growth, which is the opposite of waxing (which removes hair against the natural direction of growth). According to Web MD, removing hair in the natural direction of growth can also help to prevent ingrown hair. In addition, the sugaring process doesn’t involve sticks or strips, so there’s no need to worry about the possibility of “double dipping.” Each ball of sugar paste is only used for one client and is discarded after a single use. Lastly, sugar warmers only heat sugar paste to a lukewarm temperature (at maximum heat), unlike wax which is often heated to higher temperatures and poses the risk of a burn.
How long does my hair need to be to get sugared?
For best results we recommend that hair is at least 1/8” long. This would be about 14 days since your last shave or 1 month since your last sugaring or waxing session.
How do I prepare for my sugaring appointment?
Please see our Prep + Care section for detailed information.
How should I care for my skin post appointment?
Please see our Prep + Care section for detailed information.
What is in the sugar paste (besides sugar)?
Lemon and water. That’s it. Seriously.
Do you offer manzilians or manscaping?
Right now we only provide Brazilian and bikini services to women. However, we do offer sugaring for men’s backs, chests, arms, and legs!
Is sugaring environmentally friendly?
Yes! The sugar paste is a biodegradable paste and the sugaring process doesn’t require application sticks or strips.
If I take Accutane or use topical products with retinol is it safe to get sugared?
We do not recommend body sugaring within 6 months of taking Accutane. We also recommend that you wait at least 1 week after using a topical product with retinol (on the area you intend to have sugared) before you get sugared.
I’ve started my period and I have an appointment for a Brazilian, should I reschedule?
Menstruating does not affect the sugaring process, although please keep in mind that females are often more sensitive to pain both immediately before and during their monthly cycle. If you want to get sugared during menstruation, we require that you use a tampon during your sugaring session.
Can I get sugared right before I get an airbrush tan?
Absolutely. Actually, we recommend it. The exfoliation and lack of shaving (especially if you get your legs or arms sugared) will help a spray tan last longer.
Can minors come in for sugaring or spray tans?
Clients must be over 16 to receive a Brazilian service. Clients under the age of 18 require a parent/guardian present at the time of the waiver signing.
Tanning
What is the FlexExpress Tan®?
The FlexExpress® is a revolutionary upgrade to our current formulas that allows it to function as a Standard Tan or Express Tan. We still have the same four Elixir options as we did previously, but the shower time options are much more flexible. It can be showered off as early as an Express Tan or it can be left on as long as a Standard Tan. The FlexExpress® can be rinsed off as soon as 1 hour post-session and stops developing after 3-hours post session. Leaving it on for over 3 hours isn’t a problem!
How long should I wait to shower after a FlexExpress® tan?
You can shower as soon as 1-hour post session or any time after that. If you shower within 8 hours of your session, we recommend a warm water rinse only (no soap) and refrain from applying lotions or cosmetic products to your skin, as your tan is still developing. If you shower 8+ hours after your session, we recommend using soap. You may workout/sweat any time after your initial rinse/shower.

What should I wear to my tanning appointment?
It is best to wear (or bring a change of) dark, loose fitting clothing and slip-on shoes. (There is cosmetic bronzer in the solution and there is a chance that it can rub off on clothing. It washes out of most materials, but it is better to be on the safe side and not wear anything light in color.) Flip flop sandals are available for $3.00 upon request at all S+B locations. In addition, many of our locations offer a curated selection of dark, loose fitting clothing that is ideal to wear after a tan. Some apparel items are also available for purchase in our online shop!
What should I wear while I’m getting an airbrush tan?
Ladies, you are welcome to wear as little or as much as you are comfortable wearing- just keep unwanted tan lines in mind! (We have disposable thongs available for a $1.00 if needed.) Gentlemen, we request that you wear underwear or swimwear.
How long will my tan last?
This depends on several factors including your skin type, skin cycle, lifestyle, and care. It should last for the minimum of a week and has the potential to last as long as two weeks. The best thing that you can do to increase the longevity of your tan is to apply products from the S+B Sunless Tanning Collection once a day. Also, try to avoid activities that speed up your skin’s natural exfoliation process. Keep in mind that long showers/baths, hot tubs, heavy sweating, and swimming in saltwater and/or chlorine all tend to dry out your skin.
I have very fair skin, will a spray tan still look natural?
Yes, we will assist you picking the right Elixir for your skin tone. However, if you are new to spray tanning, we suggest selecting a lighter shade (Elixir 1 or Elixir 2) for the first session.
Why does my face tan fade faster?
This is due to several reasons. First, facial skin is thinner than skin found on other parts of the body. The face is also more exposed to the environment and endures more frequent washing. In addition, makeup, anti-aging creams, astringents, etc. tend to break down the tan more quickly. We recommend the S+B Sunless Tanning Mist, S+B Sunless Tanning Water and/or S+B Sunless Tanning Glow Drops for ongoing maintenance or signing up for one of our Signature memberships (The Single, The Double or The Triple membership) as they offer complimentary face sprays!
Will a spray tan protect me from the sun?
Unfortunately, it does not, so please remember to wear SPF!
Will dry skin affect my airbrush tan?
Dry skin may cause the tan to fade unevenly. We recommend that you moisturize daily for at least a week leading up to your tanning session and continue to moisturize regularly after your initial post-session rinse/shower. Try: S+B Hocoba Oil®, S+B Fractionated Coconut Oil and/or S+B Moisturizing Soap
Is sunless tanning safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women?
The active ingredient, DHA, has never been tested extensively on pregnant or breastfeeding women. We simply request that clients ask their doctor for an approval before they book a session.
Can I get a spray tan if I have a sunburn or my skin is peeling?
We do not recommend getting a spray tan if skin is sunburnt or peeling. It is best to way until the sunburn has completely faded and/or the peeling has stopped before getting a tan. Please remember wear SPF in the future!
Can minors come in for sugaring or spray tans?
Yes, however clients under the age of 18 require a parent/guardian present at the time of the waiver signing.
Will any of the spray get on my clothes or sheets?
Due to the fact that spray tans only affect the outermost layer of dead skin cells, it is not uncommon for sweating or natural exfoliating to cause the "tanned" skin to rub off, as our skin cells are constantly turning over. The reason that we don't see this with a UV tan is due to the fact that UV rays affect our live skin cells, which don't live on the outermost layer and therefore are not the first cells to slough off when our body sheds them.
